CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Wilberforce University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday against Ohio Christian at Gendell Family Field inside the Reds Urban Youth Academy.
GAME ONE: WILBERFORCE 4, OHIO CHRISTIAN 1
Freshman Jalen Payne delivered a dominant outing, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning en route to his first win of the season. The southpaw went the distance, allowing just one run on two hits over seven innings.
Wilberforce provided all the offense it needed in the third inning. Julien Patton sparked the rally with an infield single, followed by back-to-back bunt singles from Keith Smith Jr. and Beau Spears to load the bases. After a fielder's choice recorded an out, Christopher Alcantara-Diaz broke the game open with a three-run homer—his fourth of the season.
Joe Mendy added the lone extra-base hit among Wilberforce's seven total hits.
GAME TWO: OHIO CHRISTIAN 20, WILBERFORCE 2
Mendy accounted for both Wilberforce runs with a two-run single down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning.
Ohio Christian responded in dominant fashion, scoring 10 runs in the second inning, five in the fifth, and three in the seventh to pull away.
Adam Mendoza led Wilberforce with two of the team's six hits. Jonathan Beard (0-2) took the loss, surrendering four runs (two earned) in one inning of work.
