RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Wilberforce University baseball dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Rio Grande Monday.
GAME ONE: RIO GRANDE 8, WILBERFORCE 3
Rio Grande secured the opener thanks to a five-run sixth inning on the heels of Wilberforce knotting the game.
The Red Storm took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Freshman Waldenburg Guerrero got the Bulldogs on the board in the fifth inning, but URG responded in the bottom half of the frame.
Senior Beau Spears got the sixth-inning rally going by getting hit with one out, and he came around to score on a double by junior Darius Woodson. Sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz was intentionally walked and freshman Junior Veras Vasquez reached on an error. Senior Joe Mendy singled home the equalizer.
Senior Xavier Thompson (4-1) allowed eight runs (five earned) on seven hits over six innings with four strikeouts.
GAME TWO: RIO GRANDE 5, WILBERFORCE 3
The Red Storm scored three runs on the strength of back-to-back two-out doubles in the bottom of the fifth inning to record the comeback victory to secure the sweep.
Wilberforce took the lead with a pair of runs in the first inning via a single by Alcantara-Diaz and a sacrifice fly by Mendy.
After Rio Grande got a run back in the bottom of the first, freshman Adam Mendoza got the run back with an RBI groundout.
Junior catcher Julien Patton was the player Wilberforce player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 on the day.
Freshman Andres Anez (1-2) five runs (three earned) on seven hits over 4.2 innings with two strikeouts.
