Mendy Named Player of the Week
NEW ORLEANS, La. - For the second time in three weeks, a Wilberforce University baseball player has earned recognition from the HBCUAC, the conference has announced today (Monday, March 2, 2026).
Senior Joe Mendy (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) was named HBCUAC Player of the Week after leading the Bulldogs to an unbeaten week. Wilberforce knocked off Kentucky Christian in the midweek before taking a pair of games from UM-Dearborn Saturday.
"After a slow start, Joe is starting to reap the benefits of his hard work in the cage," said Wilberforce University baseball coach Roosevelt Barnes. "He is going to be a pivotal part of our success this season, and I am looking forward to watching him continue to grow as a person and a player."
Mendy slashed a tremendous .700/.727/.900 as the Bulldogs went 3-0. The second baseman had two doubles, three RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases. Mendy is riding a six-game hitting streak while slashing .591/.645/.940 during the streak. For the season, he is second on the team with a .419 batting average and a slash line of .419/.455/.677 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, and nine RBI.
Freshman Adam Mendoza earned Newcomer of the Week honors earlier this season. Now-senior Beau Spears is the only other Wilberforce player to pick up Player of the Week honors, earning recognition last year in week 13.
Wilberforce (5-4) travels to the University of Northwestern Ohio noon Wednesday for a nine-inning game.
