Gymnastics Posts Season-High
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Wilberforce University gymnastics team posted a season-high 179.45 points, including posted season-best marks on the balance beam and vault.
Four athletes – sophomore Madison Kelly (9.5), junior Sydney Smith (9.35), freshman Myca Kelly (9.25), and senior Mackenzie Butler (9.125) - posted season-best marks on the beam. Sophomore Saniah Smith completed the team score with an 8.675.
For the fifth time in seven meets, junior Diamond Cook was the top scoring WU gymnast on the floor – scoring a 9.5. Juniors Promise Jean-Marie and Jaidyn Bryant both scored 8.85 in their first appearance in the event. Madison Kelly (9.3), Sania Smith (9.0), and freshman Mya Caines (8.975) concluded the scoring.
Sydney Smith, for the sixth time this season, was the lead WU gymnast on the bars – scoring 9.325. Madison Kelly (9.05), Caines (8.6), freshman Hannah Gouldbourne (8.025) and senior Danielle Johnson (7.4) rounded out the bars.
Caines scored a season-best 9.4 on the vault as four of the five gymast scored at least a 9.0. Sydney Smith (9.375), Jean-Marie (9.2), sophomore Mikayla Clements (9.05), and Gouldbourne (8.5) scored for the Bulldogs.
Wilberforce hosts its lone meet 2 p.m. Sunday as Fisk and Greenville will compete in the Wilberforce University Tri-Meet.
