Cook Wins Floor in Alaska
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Junior Diamond Cook claimed the floor exercise late Friday as the Wilberforce University women's gymnastics team tallied 171.35 points in their dual meet with the University of Alaska Anchorage. It was the first time a Wilberforce gymnast as won an event at at meet.
Cook, who has improved her score in all four meets this season, led all gymnasts with a 9.6 on the floor. It's an improvement from her previous season high of 9.55 set at the Windy City Invitational. Her performance set the tone for a team season-high of 44.5 on the floor as every floor performer posted season-best marks.
Sophomore Saniah Smith posted the mark of 9.25, followed by freshman Mya Caines (9.15), sophomore Madison Kelly (9.05), and sophomore Mikayla Clements (7.5).
Caines, the program's lone all-around competitor, tied her season-high score of 34.675. It was powered by the full-point improvement on the floor. She also scored in the vault (9.225), beam (7.925), and bars (8.375).
Three gymnasts – Cook (9.375), freshman Kaleigh Garner (9.075), and senior Mackenzie Butler (9.025) - posted season-high individual scores on the vault. Clements concluded the team scoring with a 9.025.
Freshman Sydney Smith was Wilberforce's top scoring gymnast on the bars with a 9.025. The other scorers were Kelly (7.9), freshman Hannah Gouldbourne (7.0) and junior Jaidyn Bryant (6.3).
Bryant recorded a season-high 8.575 on the beam, and the other competitors were Smith (9.025), freshman Myca Kelly (8.45), Smith (8.3), and Butler (8.125).
Wilberforce returns to action against the same Seawolves 6 p.m. EST Sunday.
