The Wilberforce University women's basketball team looks to snap a five-game losing streak as they return home for a pair of HBCUAC doubleheaders.
LAST TIME OUT: Heaven Dozier pulled down 17 rebounds, 10 on the defensive end, but the Bulldogs fell to Stillman, 65-56, on November 22.
With the game tied at 54 with more than six minutes remaining, Wilberforce was held to two points for the rest of the game, and Stillman ended the game on an 11-2 run over the final 3:34 of the game.
Junior Asia Cochran came off the bench for 15 points on 5-of-17 shooting with six assists and three steals, while junior Makaia Smith added 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Laniya Early contributed 14 points and five rebounds.
ABOUT OAKWOOD: The Ambassadors had their two-game winning streak snapped with a 78-53 loss to Division I UT-Martin Sunday. Saniya Keys led the Ambassadors with 15 points and four rebounds. Trenisha Adams had seven points, six rebounds and four assists, while Kamaria Murray also had seven points.
Keys, the preseason HBCUAC Player of the Year, is one of four Ambassadors averaging double figures with a team-high 14.2 points per game. She also leads the team with 7.7 rebounds. Trenisha Adams (13.2 ppg), Kamaria Murray (13.0 ppg), and Lydia Josiah (12.0 ppg) are all averaging double figures.
As a team, Oakwood only has 54 assists on 140 baskets. Adams leads the team with 13 assists and is second with 6.5 rebounds. Murray is pulling down 6.0 rebounds.
ABOUT FISK: Sophomore guard Kayla Lee is leading the HBCUAC with 19.1 points per game after scoring 15 points in Fisk's 70-45 loss to Bethel. She also leads the team with 5.5 rebounds per game. Lee is the team leader in steals (4.0) and turnovers (5.8).
Ari Branch is the only other player in double figures, coming off the bench for 12.4 points per game.
CALIFORNIA DREAMIN': Junior Makaia Smith, a transfer from Compton, leads the team in scoring (13.6 ppg), rebounding (6.0 rpg), steals (13) and blocks (3). Her 52.7 percent shooting from the field leads the team and is eighth in the HBCUAC. Smith has two double-doubles this season and has led the team in scoring three times and rebounding three times.
EARLY BIRD: Sophomore Laniya Early is second on the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game and is second with 5.4 rebounds. She is a preseason first-time All-HBCUAC selection.
MOTOWN: Transfer guard Asia Cochran, a sophomore from Detroit, has reached double figures in all five of her games this season. She is third on the team with 12.2 points per game.
NIP & TUCK: Preseason second team All-HBCUAC selection, Makyla Tucker is fourth on the team in scoring with 8.9 points per game.
ON THE GLASS: Freshman Heaven Dozier pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds in the loss to Stillman. It was the second time this season she has recorded at least 10 boards.
