The Wilberforce University women's basketball team looks to snap a three-game losing streak as they begin HBCUAC action with a road game against Rust College.
LAST TIME OUT: Three players – junior Makaia Smith, sophomore Laniya Early, and junior Asia Cochran – all reached double figures for the Bulldogs as the Wilberforce University women's basketball team fell to Alice Lloyd Monday, 87-66, in non-conference action.
Smith led the way with 17 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Early added 13 points and five boards. Cochran finished with 10 points.
ABOUT RUST: The Bearcats snapped a four-game losing streak with the 78-22 victory over Crowley's Ridge Tuesday. Rust held Crowley's Ridge scoreless over the first 12 minutes and didn't allow a basket until the 5:43 mark of the second quarter.
Patsy Johnson led the team with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting, while Annearrah Duckworth came off the bench for 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-11 from three-point range.
Johnson, a preseason First Team All-HBCUAC selection, is leading the team with 15.3 points per game on a team-high 16.3 shots. Talyia Cawthon is second on the team with 12.4 points per game. Both of the players are averaging 2.1 steals per contest.
Michaela Payton and Unique Miller are the top two rebounders for the Bearcats, pulling down 8.7 and 7.7 rebounds, respectively.
CALIFORNIA LOVE: Junior Makaia Smith, a transfer from Compton, leads the team in rebounding (6.0 rpg), steals (13) and blocks (3), while scoring 11.2 points per game – which is good for third on the team. Her 55.2 percent shooting from the field leads the team and is 11th in the HBCUAC.
EARLY BIRD: Sophomore Laniya Early leads the team with 12.6 points per game and is second with 5.4 rebounds. She is a preseason first-time All-HBCUAC selection. She is coming off back-to-back 13-point efforts.
MOTOWN: Transfer guard Asia Cochran, a sophomore from Detroit, has scored at least nine points in all four games, including reaching double figures in three contests. She is second on the team with 11.5 points per game.
NIP & TUCK: Preseason second team All-HBCUAC selection, Makyla Tucker is fourth on the team in scoring with 10.6 points per game.
ON THE GLASS: Senior Chenoa Moss has led the team in rebounding in the last two games and is third on the team with 5.2 rebounds per contest.
