The Wilberforce University women's basketball team returns to NAIA action, traveling to Simmons College for a non-conference game.
LAST TIME OUT: Wilberforce is coming off an exhibition loss to NCAA Division I Wright State University Wednesday.
Junior Makaia Smith finished with nine points, four rebounds, a block and a steal to lead the Bulldogs. Junior Kristen Cantrell added eight points, four rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Laniya Early added four rebounds for Wilberforce.
THE SERIES: In four meetings, each team has won twice with Wilberforce sweeping the games last year and the Falcons claiming both meetings the year before.
ABOUT SIMMONS: The Falcons are coming off back-to-back losses to Fisk and Shawnee State. In Wednesday's loss to the Bears, Precious Hereford came off the bench to lead Simmons with 10 points. Christen Stone added nine points – seven coming from the free throw line – and a team-high eight rebounds.
COMMON OPPONENT: Both teams fell to Shawnee State this season. The Bulldogs suffered a 79-50 loss to SSU, while Simmons lost to the Bears, 81-42.
CALIFORNIA LOVE: Junior Makaia Smith, a transfer from Compton, leads the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg) and steals (8), while scoring 10.3 points per game – which is good for third. Her 54.5 percent shooting from the field leads the team and is 11th in the HBCUAC.
EARLY BIRD: Sophomore Laniya Early leads the team with 12.3 points per game and is second with 5.3 rebounds. She is a preseason first-time All-HBCUAC selection. After dropping 26 points in the season opener, Early has scored 11 points in total in the last two.
MOTOWN: Transfer guard Asia Cochran, a sophomore from Detroit, has scored at least nine points in all three games, and is second on the team with 12.0 points per game.
