Alcantara-Diaz, Veras-Vasquez Honored by HBCUAC
After a sizzling week at the plate—highlighted by a three-game HBCUAC sweep of Oakwood—two Wilberforce University baseball standouts earned conference honors, the league announced.
Sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz was named HBCUAC Player of the Week, while freshman Junior Veras-Vasquez claimed Freshman of the Week honors.
The series sweep pushed Wilberforce closer to clinching a spot in the upcoming HBCUAC Baseball Tournament for the second consecutive season.
"As our program continues to grow, players like Chris and Junior are vital to our success," said head coach Roosevelt Barnes. "Both delivered historic performances at the plate and have us on the brink of returning to the conference tournament."
Alcantara-Diaz put together a dominant week, especially in the Oakwood series, where he slashed an eye-popping .909/.909/1.727 with three doubles, two home runs, and 15 RBI over three games. For the week, he hit .647 with three home runs, 10 runs scored, and 19 RBI.
Veras-Vasquez closed the week on a four-game hitting streak, recording multiple hits in each contest. He finished with a .556 average, tallying nine runs, four home runs, and 14 RBI across six games.
Wilberforce returns to action at 1 p.m. Wednesday in a non-conference matchup against Kentucky State before wrapping up the regular season with a three-game home HBCUAC series against Rust.
