Baseball Loses Two to Stillman
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Wilberforce University baseball team dropped both ends of an HBCUAC doubleheader to Stillman on Don Johnson Field at the Reds Urban Youth Academy.
GAME ONE: STILLMAN 8, WILBERFORCE 4
Senior Beau Spears and junior Darius Woodson combined for five of Wilberforce's seven hits, but a pair of four-run innings powered Stillman to the opener victory.
Spears reached base in all four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and two runs scored. Woodson finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored.
Wilberforce threatened early, loading the bases with no outs in the first inning, but a strikeout and double play halted the rally. Stillman capitalized on the missed opportunity, scoring four runs in the top of the inning.
The Bulldogs chipped away with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close the gap, but the Tigers responded with four runs in the sixth to pull away.
Senior Xavier Thompson (3-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits with one strikeout and four walks.
GAME TWO: STILLMAN 4, WILBERFORCE 3
Junior Daunte Ward provided late drama with a three-run, two-out pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the seventh, but Stillman held on for the sweep.
The Tigers seized control early, scoring three runs in the first inning despite recording just one hit, aided by four walks. It marked the only walks issued by Wilberforce in the game. Stillman added a key insurance run in the seventh.
Spears, sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz, and freshman Waldenburg Guerrero each recorded a hit for the Bulldogs.
Freshman Juan Gomez (2-3) delivered a strong outing despite the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over seven innings while striking out six.
