Veras Vasquez Walks Off MUH
XENIA, Ohio – Freshman Junior Veras Vasquez delivered a clutch two-run, walk-off ground-rule double in extra innings to lift Wilberforce to a 9-8 non-conference victory over Miami University Hamilton at the Browne Family Complex at Athletes in Action.
Wilberforce put the pressure on in the bottom of the inning, as back-to-back one-out walks to senior Beau Spears and junior Darius Woodson, combined with a passed ball, moved the potential winning runs into scoring position. Miami Hamilton elected to intentionally walk sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz—who homered earlier in the game—to load the bases.
The decision proved costly.
Veras Vasquez drove the ensuing pitch over the head of the left fielder and over the fence, scoring two and sealing the dramatic victory. He also earned the win on the mound, tossing two innings of relief without allowing an earned run.
The Bulldogs' late heroics overcame a difficult stretch in the eighth inning, when the Harriers erased a three-run deficit—highlighted by an inside-the-park home run—and briefly took the lead with an unearned run in the 10th.
Veras Vasquez paced the offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and three RBI. Freshman Samuel Borrero added two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Wilberforce utilized seven pitchers in the contest, with freshmen Jonathan Beard and Brandon Bell joining Veras Vasquez in delivering key relief efforts. Each tossed two innings without allowing an earned run. Bell, making his first appearance in a month, entered in the fifth inning with two runners on and no outs and worked out of the jam without surrendering a run.
Wilberforce (11-9) returns to HBCUAC action at 1 p.m. Friday, hosting Talladega at the Reds Urban Youth Academy in Cincinnati.
