Gomez, Veras Vasquez Earn HBCUAC Honors
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The weekly honors continue to roll in for the Wilberforce University baseball team.
For the third time in four weeks, a baseball player has been honored for their contributions on the diamond. This time it was a pair of Wilberforce athletes to earn the laurel.
Sophomore Juan Gomez was named Pitcher of the Week, while freshman Junior Veras Vasquez earned Freshman of the Week honors. It marks the second time this season a Wilberforce player has earned the weekly freshman award, while it's the first-ever time a WU hurler earned the weekly pitching award.
"These awards are indicative of the development of our baseball program," said Wilberforce Head Baseball Coach Roosevelt Barnes. "Improving the pitching depth has always been a landmark to what we need to help our program take the next step, and having Gomez earn Pitcher of the Week shows our work.
"Junior had a phenomenal week at the plate and now it's incumbent on him to make the adjustments to the way team's will pitch him going forward," Barnes continued.
In his lone start of the week, Gomez hurled a complete game, five-hitter, allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts.
Four of Veras Vasquez' five hits went for extra bases as he slashed .385/.471/1.077 in helping Wilberforce to a 3-1 record. In the doubleheader sweep of Voorhees Friday, the third baseman had two homers with eight RBI.
Wilberforce (8-8) returns to HBCUAC action Noon EST Friday for a doubleheader with Rust.
