CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Wilberforce University baseball split an HBCUAC doubleheader with Voorhees Sunday, taking the opener and falling in the nightcap – snapping a six-game winning streak in the process at Hayden Field on the campus of Xavier University.
The six-game winning streak was the longest since Wilberforce brought baseball back to campus four years ago.
GAME ONE: WILBERFORCE 12, VOORHEES 3
Senior Beau Spears and junior Darius Woodson combined for seven of the team's eight RBI as the Bulldogs officially extended its modern-day record winning streak to six games.
Woodson went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and four RBI, while Spears drove in three on three walks with two runs scored. Spears registered three of the team's eight walks.
Wilberforce did nearly all of its damage over two innings, scoring five runs in the second inning and six more in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Juan Gomez (1-1) recorded her first collegiate victory, hurling a complete game, five-hitter, allowing one earned run with four strikeouts.
GAME TWO: VOORHEES 7, WILBERFORCE 3
Voorhees scored four runs in a pivotal fifth inning as the Tigers recorded the victory. The game was a Tigers' home game from the series on February 20.
The game-deciding inning began with back-to-back walks and a hit batter and ended with a two-run bomb.
Spears scored on a wild pitch in the first to give Wilberforce the lead, and an RBI triple by freshman Junior Veras Vazquez pulled the Bulldogs to within 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Unfortunately, Voorhees padded its leads in the bottom of the frame.
Spears and Veras Vasquez were responsible for all four of the Wilberforce hits, recording two hits each. Woodson walked in all four of his plate appearances, while sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz walked twice.
Wilberforce (8-5 overall, 3-1 HBCUAC) will complete the game against Rio Grande that was suspended on February 17th with the Bulldogs trailing 9-1. The two teams will then play the regularly scheduled doubleheader.
