XENIA, Ohio – The Wilberforce University baseball team posted its second consecutive doubleheader sweep, taking a pair from the University of Michigan-Dearborn Saturday at the Browne Family Complex in Athletes in Action.
GAME ONE: WILBERFORCE 6, UM-DEARBORN 4
Wilberforce totaled six runs in their last two at-bats to claim the comeback victory.
A pair of one-out walks set the stage for a three-run fifth as sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz got the Bulldogs on the board with an RBI single and senior Joe Mendy brought home two more runs with a two-out double.
UMD pulled to within 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth, but Wilberforce added some cushion in its half of the frame. Junior Darius Woodson doubled home two and Alcantara-Diaz scored another with a sacrifice fly.
Senior Xavier Thompson (3-0) hurled his first complete game of the season, allowing four runs – three earned – on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Mendy finished 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI and a stolen base, while Woodson was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base.
GAME TWO: WILBERFORCE 7, UM-DEARBORN 5
Wilberforce scored five runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead and held on for the 7-5 win to secure the sweep.
A one-out double by Woodson followed by an Alcantara-Diaz single put the Bulldogs on the board in the first inning. After the first two hitters reached in the second, a double steal with Phillip Williams III and Kevin Smith brought home another run.
Freshman Junior Veras Vasquez brought home two more runs with a single, a wild pitch crossed another run, and a Mendy single concluded the big inning.
The Wolverines pulled within one run with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth, but Wilberforce tacked on a much-needed insurance run in its part of the fourth.
Veras Vasquez and Mendy recorded three hits each, combining for six of the team's 10 hits. Veras Vasquez was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Mendy was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Woodson added a double, a triple and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Freshman Andres Anez (1-1) allowed three unearned runs on two hits over 3.1 innings with five strikeouts.
Wilberforce (5-4) returns to action 1 p.m. Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader at the University of Northwestern Ohio.
