Huge Inning, Stellar Pitching Lead to Win
XENIA, Ohio – The Wilberforce University baseball team used the combination of strong pitching and an explosive offense to record the 10-1 non-conference win over Kentucky Christian Wednesday in the Browne Family Complex at Athletes In Action.
Wilberforce's pitching staff limited the Knights to just two hits and an unearned run in registering the victory. In a designated bullpen game, four pitchers combined to shutout the Knights offensive attack. Senior Xavier Thompson (2-1) went three innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
The Bulldogs blew the game open with a seven spot in the fifth inning as the inning began with three straight walks. Junior Daunte Ward brought home a run with a single, followed by an RBI fielder's choice. Senior Keith Smith perfectly executed a suicide sqeeze for another run. A two-RBI single by junior Darius Woodson and two-RBI double by sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz capped the huge offensive output.
Wilberforce took the lead with individual runs in the first, second, and fourth innings before the aforementioned explosion.
Woodson completed a three-hit game with three runs scored and two RBI, while Alcantara-Diaz was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Smith finished 2-for-3, two RBI, and three stolen bases.
Wilberforce (3-4 overall) travels to Lima, Ohio March 4 to face Northwestern Ohio in a non-conference doubleheader.
