WILLIAMSBURG, KY – The Wilberforce University baseball team opened the season Friday, dropping a pair of games to nationally-ranked University of Cumberlands.
GAME ONE: CUMBERLANDS 7, WILBERFORCE 0
Freshman Andres Anez (0-1) pitched great in his collegiate debut, allowing just one earned run on three hits over four innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
Senior Thomas Hampton went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, while junior Darius Woodson was 1-for-4. Freshman Junior Veras Vasquez reached twice via a pair of walks and added two stolen bases.
The Patriots took the lead with two unearned runs in the first inning and added to their advantage with a solo homer in the third inning. The Cumberlands added two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth off the Wilberforce bullpen.
GAME TWO: CUMBERLANDS 14, WILBERFORCE 2
Sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz brought home Wilberforce's only runs with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the sixth inning. Back-to-back two-out walks, followed by a single by Hampton, brought Alcantara-Diaz up with bases loaded, and he delivered.
Woodson had the other Wilberforce hit, and the Bulldogs finished with four stolen bases.
Freshman Jalen Payne allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits over three innings. He added three strikeouts in his first collegiate outing.

Wilberforce (0-2) travels to Alice Lloyd 1 p.m. Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader.
